This month’s pick is Mike Birbiglia’s “Don’t Think Twice.”
Genuinely good comedies can be hard to come by, which is why Birbiglia should be considered a national treasure. With his second film, “Don’t Think Twice,” Birbiglia proves why he is considered one of the best comedians currently working.
“Don’t Think Twice” follows the lives and friendships of a six-member improv group after one of them makes it big. One could assume this is a familiar story to Birbiglia, so it is no surprise his film feels so personal. The film touches on jealousy, success, love, self-esteem and friendship in sincere ways that are all too often absent in comedy films.
First things first, “Don’t Think Twice” features some of the best and brightest in terms of working comedians. Starring in the film are Mike Birbiglia, Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Chris Gethard (my personal favorite).
This ensemble is perfectly matched by Birbiglia’s script, which so elegantly portrays the lives of friends as they begin to grow up and grow apart. Though the film deals with some heavy subject matter, it is not wholly bleak. It’s still a comedy. It’s just grounded in the real world and deals with real problems, which make it all the more worthwhile.
“Don’t Think Twice” is a near perfect movie. It is heartfelt, well-written, funny, and the cast is absolutely perfect. If you’re in the mood for something meaningful and relatable that will also provide some laughs be sure to make time for “Don’t Think Twice.”
